Early Life and Education

Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse, aged 60, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, in Terre Haute, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on October 2, 1963, in Terre Haute, Indiana, John Plasse was the son of Eli John Plasse and Violet Marie Traverse Plasse. A proud 1982 graduate of Terre Haute North High School, John went on to earn his degree from Indiana State University in 1990, setting the stage for a remarkable career in public service.

Distinguished Career as Vigo County Sheriff

John Plasse’s legacy is closely tied to his distinguished career as Vigo County Sheriff. Elected as Vigo County Sheriff in 2018, he began his first term on January 1, 2019, and was re-elected for a second term in 2023. His commitment to the safety and well-being of the Vigo County community was unwavering.

Military Service and Honors

Before his tenure as Vigo County Sheriff, John Plasse served in the Indiana Army National Guard for 34 years, retiring in November 2017 with the rank of Sergeant Major in the 38th Infantry Division. His military service earned him numerous awards, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. John Plasse was also inducted into the Association of Marksman in the National Guard Shooters Hall of Fame in 2018, one of the few double distinguished military marksmen globally.

Law Enforcement Contributions

Sheriff John Plasse’s contributions to law enforcement extended beyond his role as Vigo County Sheriff. He dedicated 33 years to the Terre Haute Police Department, retiring in 2018 after an exemplary career. During his time with the department, he held various positions, including assignments in the uniform division, criminal investigation division, juvenile division, and the Vigo County Drug Task Force. His leadership as Chief of Police from January 1, 2008, to 2018 left a lasting impact on the community. His efforts were recognized with numerous awards, including The Exchange Club of Terre Haute Officer of the Year in 2001 and First Financial Bank Officer of the Year in 2003.

Community Involvement

In addition to his professional achievements, Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse was deeply involved in community service. He served on multiple boards, including the United Way of the Wabash Valley, Boys and Girls Club of Terre Haute, and Happiness Bag. His dedication to public service was further acknowledged when he was named the 2021 Wabash Valley Recovery Community Public Official of the Year and received Honor Guard recognition in 2024.

Family and Personal Life

Sheriff John Plasse was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Julie Plasse; their children: son Ryan Plasse of Terre Haute and daughters Bryttany Dunkley (Jeremy) of New Goshen and Dylaney Plasse of Terre Haute. He also leaves behind a brother, Robert David Plasse (Diane) of Louisiana, and a sister, Carol Jones of Terre Haute. John Plasse was a beloved grandfather to three grandchildren, Brynley, Bryley, and Bentley. He is also survived by his in-laws, Georgia and Jerry McIntyre of Terre Haute, as well as his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Mark Boyll. Additionally, he is fondly remembered by his nephew Jaden Brown (Sarah) and nieces Kyleigh Shell (Trevor) and Kaleigh Riley (Corey), along with many other cherished nieces and nephews.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral service for Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hulman Civic Center, 200 North 8th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47809. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Soldiers Circle, with Pastor Billy Joe Henry officiating. In honor of Sheriff John Plasse’s love for animals, the family requests that contributions be made to a local animal rescue of your choice in lieu of flowers.
